DOROTHY TILLMAN, A TEENAGER WITH DOCTORATE.

•

Dorothy Jean Tillman, now 17, successfully completed her dissertation and, at 18, graduated from Arizona State University with a doctorate in integrated behavioral health.

By the time Dorothy Jean Tillman turned 14, she had already earned an associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degree. Yet, her academic journey was far from over. Amidst the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, Dorothy expressed to her mother, Jimalita Tillman, her desire to pursue a doctorate. This revelation surprised Jimalita, especially since Dorothy was already engrossed in establishing a startup STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) camp and seeking funding for it. Jimalita recalled her initial reaction, telling CNN, "I thought you were done." However, upon learning that Dorothy’s motivation stemmed from a wish to positively influence young people’s mental health, she fully supported her daughter's ambitious pursuit.

Two years later, Dorothy, now 17, successfully completed her dissertation and, at 18, graduated from Arizona State University with a doctorate in integrated behavioral health. Her graduation, marked by her walk at the College of Health Solutions convocation on May 8, was a moment of pride for Jimalita, who expressed her admiration for her daughter’s resilience and leadership, especially during the pandemic. Dorothy’s early academic prowess had been evident since she was 7, at which age she began engaging in high school coursework. This early start led her to take college-level tests, eventually culminating in her advanced degrees.

Dorothy's dissertation focused on the stigma that prevents university students from seeking mental health treatment, a subject close to her heart. Beyond her academic achievements, she actively runs the Dorothy Jeanius STEAM Leadership Institute. This organization aims to inspire young people, particularly those from underserved communities in Chicago and internationally in Ghana and South Africa, to pursue careers in STEAM fields. The institute not only provides educational resources but also facilitates discussions on the various STEAM disciplines, encouraging a holistic understanding and engagement.

Despite her extraordinary accomplishments, Dorothy remains grounded, enjoying time with family and friends. She credits much of her success to her mother, whom she describes as her greatest motivator and supporter. Another significant influence in her life is her grandmother, Dorothy Tillman, a former Chicago alderwoman and civil rights activist who worked with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This rich family legacy of activism and achievement fuels Dorothy’s ambitions.

Looking ahead, Dorothy plans to continue expanding her camps, possibly franchising them to reach more children. She also hopes to dedicate more time to working with youth in Africa, a region she feels she has neglected due to her studies. Throughout her journey, Dorothy emphasizes the importance of a supportive network, stating, "It's teamwork that makes the dream work." She acknowledges that her accomplishments have been made possible not just by her own efforts, but by the support of her family and community.
