Ghanaian football legend Asamoah Gyan has recently come under fire from Kevin Taylor, a prominent political commentator, for publicly supporting Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's presidential campaign. The controversy began when Gyan joined Dr. Bawumia and other members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) on a health walk in Akropong, a town in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
During this event, which saw thousands of NPP supporters in attendance, Gyan took to the podium to express his support for Dr. Bawumia. He highlighted some of the Vice President's plans for the youth, emphasizing his trust in Dr. Bawumia to deliver on his promises if elected president.
"I’ll keep my message very short. I stand for the youth. I was speaking to the Vice President this morning and I asked him what he has for the youth,” Gyan said. “It was a one-on-one meeting but I have to come out and say it. He told me his focus is mainly on the youth. So I told him to help the youth for me so that everything would fall into place. He has honoured me personally by allowing me to chair his manifesto committee on youth and sports. If he has done that for me, I’m very sure he’ll honour his promises to the youth. So I leave 7th December in your hands.”
Gyan’s endorsement of Dr. Bawumia did not sit well with Kevin Taylor, who hosts the popular Loud Silence Show. Taylor reacted strongly to Gyan’s public support, labeling him a "charlatan" and a "senseless being." Taylor accused Gyan of trying to manipulate the youth to vote for Dr. Bawumia and threatened to expose and disgrace him if he continues to campaign for the Vice President.
"According to Kevin Taylor, Asamoah Gyan is a dirty guy who’s trying to influence the youths to vote for Dr Bawumia," a source stated. During his show, Taylor also urged the public to question Gyan about a woman named Linda Nana Adwoa, suggesting that Gyan should have faced legal consequences five years ago.
Taylor's warnings to Gyan were severe. He cautioned the football star to reconsider his support for Dr. Bawumia, implying that it could lead to his downfall. "The NDC stalwart cautioned Asamoah Gyan to be very careful for picking sides with Dr Bawumia because he’ll break him," Taylor warned.
This incident has sparked widespread debate among Ghanaians, with opinions divided on Gyan's decision to enter the political fray and Taylor's aggressive response. Supporters of Gyan argue that he has every right to express his political views and support any candidate he believes in, while others believe that public figures like Gyan should remain neutral to avoid influencing their fans unduly.
On the other hand, some back Taylor's criticism, believing that Gyan's involvement in politics could be seen as an attempt to sway the youth vote in favor of Dr. Bawumia, thereby undermining the democratic process. They argue that celebrities should use their influence responsibly and avoid entangling themselves in political controversies.
Asamoah Gyan, known for his impressive football career and significant contributions to Ghanaian sports, now finds himself at the center of a political storm. Whether he will heed Kevin Taylor's warnings or continue to support Dr. Bawumia remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that Gyan's political endorsement has ignited a conversation about the role of celebrities in politics and the responsibilities that come with their influence.
