The family of the late Ga Manye, Naa Dedei Omaedru III, has raised serious concerns about the recent funeral rites conducted by the Ga Traditional Council, labeling the entire ceremony as a "fraud" and "fake." According to the family, they have been subjected to death threats, which prevented them from speaking out earlier.
In a press conference held on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at Omaedro We, Asafoatse Nii Kotey Ga II, the family’s spokesperson, shared the family’s side of the story. He revealed that the family had been threatened with violence and even assassination if they spoke out about the truth behind the funeral rites. This, he claimed, is why they had stayed silent until now.
Asafoatse Nii Kotey Ga II, who spoke on behalf of the family, stated that assassins were sent after them, forcing them to exercise extreme caution. The spokesperson described how the family had to take great care to avoid violence and protect their lives. He said, "They threatened to kill us. They instructed us to remain silent and not speak out about the situation, and if you’re wondering why we didn’t speak up sooner, it was because our lives were in danger and we had been threatened with death."
He went on to explain that their silence was a matter of survival. Despite the threats, the family has now decided to come forward and reveal what they claim is the truth—that the funeral ceremonies conducted by the Ga Traditional Council were fraudulent, and their Queenmother has not been properly laid to rest.
The family did not stay idle during this period of silence. Asafoatse Nii Kotey Ga II shared that they had reached out to several high-ranking officials and institutions to voice their concerns. Among those they contacted were the Chieftaincy Minister, the National Security Minister, and other key state officials. Despite their efforts, they felt ignored, which added to their frustration and fear.
"We discussed the case with the National Security Minister, Kan Dapaah, the Chieftaincy Minister, and famous lawyers from Ga State. We also visited with members of the Council of State, particularly those from our state. We also met with Kan Dapaah, hoping that the President had been updated on the issue. We spoke with and visited everyone who mattered, pleading for justice to be done, but our concerns were not addressed," he explained.
In a shocking revelation, Asafoatse Nii Kotey Ga II disclosed that the family was offered a sum of GHS 1 million to keep quiet about the situation. However, they refused the money, choosing instead to pursue what they believe is the right thing to do—bringing the truth to light.
"We expected those involved in the matter to see reason with us, but instead, they organized the phoney funeral to deceive Ghanaians. But we have now revealed the truth, which is that our Queenmother has not been laid to rest," he stated.
