Popular and controversial Ghanaian dancehall artist Shatta Wale has announced his intention to build specialized prisons for short-term sentences if he were to be President of Ghana.
The declaration, made via the TikTok platform is already sparking discussions in the country. Shatta Wale, known for his outspoken nature and influence in the entertainment industry, outlined his vision for a new approach to criminal justice in Ghana. He emphasized his remarks were in response to what he described as a troubling level of disrespect and indiscipline from some of his colleagues in particular.
He further stated “There are lots of land available for that. Even in Afienya, Winneba, I will be able to acquire some land and build these prisons” he established.
He explained these proposed facilities would be focused on rehabilitation and skills training, offering inmates the opportunity to learn trades, receive education, and prepare for reintegration into society.
The Ghanaian dancehall artist said, “The current prison system fails to address the root causes of crime and often leaves those with minor offences worse off than before.”
“If I became president, I would build a lot of prisons. People will be trooping in and out; they will be taking turns to serve short jail terms just to learn sense. They will serve one month, two months, or even two weeks in jail. People are just misbehaving these days, talking and acting anyhow, so their experiences in jail will enable them to learn sense and straighten them up,” he stated.
Recent remarks by Stonebwoy criticizing the trend of artists throwing money at fans could have been one of the reasons Shatta Wale wants to build prisons, claiming the comments by his colleague were directed at him, to which he urged the BHIM Nation boss to stay out of his affairs.
Shatta Wale has not yet announced any formal plans to run for office, leaving many to wonder whether this is the beginning of a larger political movement or just another headline-grabbing moment.
