The General Overseer of Action Chapel International, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has spoken publicly for the first time about why he resigned from the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral of Ghana. His departure, along with that of Rev. Eastwood Anaba, the leader of Eastwood Anaba Ministries, was announced in October 2023, raising questions and concerns from the public.
In a post shared on August 27, 2024, by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Facebook, Duncan-Williams revealed that his decision to leave the board was because he felt his presence was no longer necessary. He believed that he could not make a difference in the way the project was being managed. “I left the National Cathedral's Board because I felt I couldn't make a difference there,” the Archbishop said.
This statement marks the first time Archbishop Duncan-Williams has directly addressed the reasons behind his resignation. His comments come almost a year after he and Rev. Eastwood Anaba formally stepped down from their roles as board members.
In their joint resignation letter to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, both clergymen expressed growing concerns about the transparency and accountability of the National Cathedral project. They explained that despite their prayers and best hopes for the project, there had been a lack of progress in conducting a necessary audit that could help restore public confidence.
The clergymen pointed out that since January 2023, they had been waiting for news regarding an audit of the project, but no updates or findings had been shared. They stated that this lack of transparency was the main reason for their decision to resign.
"Despite our prayers, best hopes and wishes, unfortunately, a needed audit to help restore public confidence and trust in this consequential project has not been enacted to the best of our knowledge. Since January 2023, we have awaited news, to no avail, regarding the findings of the audit. We, therefore, regret that as a matter of conscience and faith, we hereby submit to you our resignation from the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral," their statement read.
The Archbishop and Rev. Anaba also emphasized that their decision to leave should not be seen as a rejection of the vision or purpose of the National Cathedral. Instead, they stressed that their actions were meant to strengthen the project by ensuring it was built on principles of integrity, efficiency, and quality. They explained that these values are crucial to maintaining public trust and support for the cathedral, which is expected to be a significant national symbol.
"We honourably assure you, as we assured the Board of Trustees in January 2023, with the submission of our resignation, that our action in no way impugns the vision or intent of the National Cathedral, but rather ensures that it is advanced and built on a foundation of integrity, efficiency, and quality while gaining and maintaining public trust and support. We truly owe this to God and to the country," they stated.
The National Cathedral of Ghana is a project that has drawn both excitement and controversy since it was first announced. It is intended to serve as a symbol of national unity and a place of worship for the people of Ghana. However, concerns over the project's funding, management, and progress have raised doubts among sections of the public.
