Darwin Nunez is banned for FIVE matches after fighting with fans in the Copa America.

Nunez will not be able to play again for his country until a World Cup qualifier against Brazil in November, and Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been banned for four matches.

Darwin Nunez, a Liverpool forward, has been suspended for five international matches and fined $20,000 (£15,000) for his role in fighting between players and spectators following Uruguay's loss to Colombia at the Copa America in July.

Nunez will not be able to play for his country again until a World Cup qualifier against Brazil in November, and Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been suspended for four games.

CONMEBOL, the regulatory body of South American football, has sanctioned 11 players in all as a result of the incidents, with the Uruguayan Football Association fined $120,000.

Nunez and Bentancur received the harshest sanctions, with three other players - Mathias Olivera, Ronald Araujo, and Jose Maria Gimenez - banished for three matches each. Santiago Mele, Matias Vina, Sebastian Caceres, Emiliano Martinez, Facundo Pellistri, and Brian Rodriguez were each fined $5,000 for their roles in the chaos.

Angry scenes erupted following Colombia's 1-0 victory over Uruguay at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina on July 11, when James Rodriguez's goal was enough to secure Colombia's berth in the final.

Conflict broke out in a part of the crowd near where the Uruguay players' families were housed, so Nunez rushed into the stands with some of his teammates to help defend them.

The Liverpool forward was later spotted cuddling his young son, as Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa slammed US authorities and security after the game.

"The only thing I can say is that the players reacted as any human being would have done," he told reporters. "What do you do if they attack his wife, mother, a baby, his wife, or his sister?

"Do you want to know if they're going to sanction those who went to defend? There is some culpability because the questions themselves function in a complicit manner. "You (the journalists) must say this, not what I have to say."

Nunez will be absent from matches against Paraguay, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia, while Bentancur will miss the first four before returning to face Colombia.

Due to the suspensions, the Premier League pair will miss the international vacations in September and October before returning to the Uruguay squad in November.
