Real Madrid to walk off the pitch in response to racial abuse.

Vinicius Junior, the Real Madrid forward, has faced unprecedented levels of racial abuse in Spanish football, with over 20 reported incidents in the past three years alone. The Brazilian star has become a prominent advocate against racism, frequently criticizing La Liga President Javier Tebas for failing to address the issue effectively.

One particularly alarming incident occurred at Mestalla Stadium, where Vinicius was subjected to racial abuse and subsequently received a red card after his frustration boiled over. In an interview with CNN, Vinicius revealed that he and his teammates have discussed a potential response if such abuse were to recur. They have agreed that in such a situation, the entire team should leave the pitch as a means to force a more substantial penalty for those responsible.

Vinicius explained, “Within the team, we frequently discuss this issue. If it happens again, we all agree that leaving the pitch is the right course of action. This would ensure that those who insult us face a far greater consequence.” He added that while leaving the pitch might negatively impact the game, the worsening situation necessitates such drastic measures to effect change. He acknowledged that not all spectators are involved in the racism and that this action is a way to prompt meaningful reforms.

Currently, the established protocol involves a referee warning the crowd over the loudspeaker, briefly pausing the game, and then stopping it entirely if the racist behavior persists through three separate incidents. However, this procedure has yet to be enacted.

Vinicius’ activism has already led to the first jail sentences for racial abuse at Spanish football matches. He has noted a tangible shift in the atmosphere, observing that while racism may still exist, individuals are now more cautious about expressing discriminatory views in public, particularly in the presence of cameras.

The increase in vigilance and the implementation of punitive measures are crucial steps toward reducing racial abuse in Spanish football. Vinicius remains hopeful that these efforts will gradually diminish the prevalence of racism, contributing to a more inclusive and respectful environment in the sport.
