Liverpool stance on Alan Varela transfer on deadline day after bombshell claims

Liverpool has ruled out a last-minute move for Porto midfielder Alan Varela, despite widespread rumors that suggested the Reds had made a formal offer for the 23-year-old. Reports had initially surfaced, claiming that Liverpool had been exploring Varela's availability since April and that a late bid was imminent.

Varela, who has a release clause of $72 million (£55 million/€65 million), has attracted interest from multiple clubs after an impressive debut season in Europe following his transfer from Boca Juniors to Porto. However, it has been confirmed by several reliable sources, including The Athletic, that Liverpool is not pursuing Varela. Additionally, Argentine journalist Cesar Luis Merlo reported that Porto had informed Liverpool that Varela is "non-transferrable" and that the Portuguese club plans to improve his contract, which is set to expire in 2028.

This development comes as a disappointment to Liverpool, who had been searching for a defensive midfielder following several missed opportunities in the transfer market. Earlier in the summer, Liverpool was linked with Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi, but the player turned down a move to Anfield.

Despite missing out on Varela, Liverpool has remained active in the transfer market. The Reds recently completed the signing of Juventus winger Federico Chiesa for €12 million ($13.3 million) plus €3 million in add-ons. Additionally, Liverpool secured a deal for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili for approximately £29 million, although he will stay with the La Liga club until next summer.

For now, it appears that Liverpool will continue their search for a suitable defensive midfielder as they look to bolster their squad before the transfer window closes.
