Erling Haaland and Manchester City are reportedly negotiating a new deal that includes a release clause.
Since his arrival at the Etihad Stadium in the summer of 2022, Haaland has shown himself to be a tremendous success for City. With 70 goals in just 69 Premier League games, he is currently averaging more than one goal per game.
The striker's contract expires in 2027, but there may be a nine-figure release clause worth as much as £175 million.
An agreement between City and Haaland over a new contract is allegedly "not far away," according to the Spanish outlet MARCA, however they also point out that any new agreement will still have an escape clause.
Rafaela Pimenta, Haaland's representative, has met with City authorities multiple times on the contract. Through release clauses, she and the player's father, former Premier League football player Alf-Inge, have emphasised that Haaland should be in charge of his own fate.
Real Madrid has long been predicted to be Haaland's final destination. They are not currently looking to add another attacker, but that might change in the future after they acquired Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in the summer.
The only other team that could actually afford to sign Haaland is PSG, but they are putting more of an emphasis on developing their young players and are no longer aligned with the big-money recruitment model that was adopted after Mbappe left.
Haaland is content at City, though, and they hope he will continue to represent their initiative for many years to come. Although manager Pep Guardiola has not yet decided what to do with himself after his contract expires in 2025, he has granted the club permission to keep Haaland on for as long as feasible.
