When Wayne Rooney scored an incredible free kick during Saturday's charity match between Manchester United and Celtic, he reminded everyone that class never goes out.
The all-time top scorer for United has recently branched out into management, leading the teams of Derby County, DC United, Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle, whom he was signed to a three-year contract in May.
However, the 38-year-old was back in winning mode at Old Trafford when he lined up for United against Celtic in a foundation charity event. This was Rooney's first time donning the fabled number 10 jersey since leaving the team in 2017.
As halftime approached and there was still no goal in the match, United was given a free kick slightly outside of Celtic's penalty area. Rooney took control of the situation, as he so frequently did in his prime, probably dreaming of bending the ball into the upper corner.
To the joy of everyone inside Old Trafford, Rooney accomplished just that when his delectably curled attempt swerved past Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc and into the upper corner while the goalkeeper stayed immobile between the posts.
"It will be a special moment to be back out there at Old Trafford, and all for such a good cause," Rooney had stated prior to the game. Playing there once more will be fantastic. I am so excited to see all of the fans again and I can't wait."
Gary Hooper eventually tied the score for Celtic, forcing a thrilling penalty shootout. United's goals came from Rooney, Denis Irwin, and Fletcher; however, former academy scorer Danny Webber's shot was saved.
The error cost United dearly because Celtic scored all five of their penalties; nonetheless, Rooney's reminder of his brilliance will live on in the game's memory.
