In the boardroom, Chelsea is on the verge of a "civil war" as Todd Boehly is prepared to attempt to buy out other co-owners Clearlake Capital.
In 2022, when Roman Abramovich was forced to sell Chelsea, Boehly teamed up with Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, the proprietors of Clearlake, to take over the club.
Nonetheless, a number of reports in recent months have indicated that the co-owners' relationship has soured. Bloomberg reported on Friday that Boehly and Clearlake were thinking about purchasing the other side.
The Telegraph then revealed that Clearlake had no plans to sell their ownership of the team.
According to a new, unrelated source, Boehly thinks he can fund more than £2.5 billion to make Clearlake an offer that would allow them to profit from their investment in 2022. There appears to be a breakdown in the two parties' relationship as a result of several disagreements on important issues.
Boehly wants a quick fix to prevent a "civil war" from starting since he thinks the circumstances above at Stamford Bridge are "untenable."
The American billionaire, who also owns a share in the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball, is rumoured to have a 30-year plan for Chelsea that includes constructing a new stadium—a problem that hasn't been fixed in the two years since the takeover.
Regarding ownership, neither party seems ready to give in. Chelsea's current owners have the amazing and nearly unheard-of ability to swap the chairmanship every five years and to accept or reject offers of outside funding should any party wish to sell their share.
