Conor Gallagher, who transferred to Atletico Madrid in the summer, has refuted claims that he wouldn't have fit into Enzo Maresca's squad at Chelsea.

The 24-year-old had a challenging window following his England representation at Euro 2024. Spain expressed interest in Gallagher, who was told if he didn't leave Stamford Bridge he would be exiled to the training ground after failing to reach an agreement on a new deal with the Blues.

Following a lengthy legal battle, the former Crystal Palace loanee signed a contract with Atletico in a transaction allegedly worth £34 million. Since then, he has made two appearances in La Liga, contributing to Diego Simeone's team's victories.

Gallagher has refuted claims that he wouldn't have clicked with the possession-focused Maresca, stating that his results from the previous season demonstrate his ability to play for Chelsea on a weekly basis.

"I don't think that's true personally," stated the midfield player. You could tell that I had a wonderful season with Chelsea last season because he played me in every game and had faith in me. In addition, the supporters valued my performance on the pitch.

I'm incredibly appreciative of the fans as well as all of that. I'm also grateful to [Mauricio] Pochettino for providing me with the opportunity to express myself and play my best at Chelsea.

"Chelsea has signed some elite players to extended contracts, and they make their own judgements. Although that wasn't my case, everyone is glad since what transpired in the end is beneficial to everyone."

No player appeared in more Chelsea games across all competitions last season than Gallagher, who also frequently led the squad under former manager Pochettino.

He has, nevertheless, defended his boyhood group and asserted that everything has turned out nicely for everyone.

"Things happen in football," he continued. I left Chelsea because of my circumstances, but when I think back on all the times I had, I'm glad I had the opportunity to play for them for the few years I did.

It fulfilled a dream of mine. I'm quite fortunate.

As everyone is aware, there was a lot going on during the few weeks that Chelsea and Atletico were attempting to reach an agreement. There were other circumstances involved. However, I maintained my composure throughout, and I'm quite pleased with the result."
