Jonathan David, who was linked to both Chelsea and Aston Villa throughout the summer, has acknowledged that he is interested in moving to the Premier League.
Following an outstanding season in France, it was anticipated that the forward from Canada will go from Ligue 1 to the Premier League during the summer transfer window. In 47 games, the 24-year-old scored 26 goals for Lille. making him the subject of the most discussions in the window.
But as the deadline approached, it became evident that David would have to stay in Lille for an additional year as he approached the last 12 months of his contract.
David explained why his summertime plans were altered in an interview with The Athletic. "It just didn't happen," he declared. "There were a few offers, and we simply didn't see the transaction through to completion.
"I had conversations with two teams. I had a conversation with coaches. But in the end, we decided to remain. Why am I holding out for? It's probably simpler to say today. I have one year left on my contract. My contract will eventually expire. Then, we'll see. Next year, we'll see what transpires.
We're currently discussing a potential extension with [Lille president Oliver Letang]. Let's see how that turns out.
"Anything goes with me. It goes without saying that the Premier League is thought to be among the greatest leagues in the world. And it's not the Premier League or nothing at all for me. There are obstacles in every level, but I'm open to everything."
David has scored three goals in seven appearances to start the 2024–25 season on a high note. In a friendly on Saturday, Canada defeated the USA 2-1, and he scored a goal in the match.
