For Germany, the youthful firecrackers are dazzling.
After shining in the Nations League, Florian Wirtz of Bayer Leverkusen and Jamal Musiala of Bayern Munich set the tone for the German assault at EURO 2024. They are continuing where they left off on Saturday, each scoring in a 5-0 victory over Hungary.
The fact that both 21-year-olds contribute significantly to their respective teams as either inverted wing or central attacking midfield players makes Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann's decision to start them all in the same starting lineup all the more remarkable.
Perhaps some sporting directors, either in the Bundesliga or elsewhere, are taking notice of it. During the press conference on Monday, in advance of Germany's next international encounter against the Netherlands on Tuesday, Nagelsmann addressed enquiries regarding his potential for the two to collaborate at the club level as well.
"It sounds possible, but the cost will be high." In Leverkusen, [DFB chief Rudi Völler] made Flo's contract. Who knows, maybe Jamal will visit Leverkusen as well," Nagelsmann said, as reported by Kerry Hau of Sky Sport (via @iMiaSanMia). "In any case, bringing the two together at the club level will be costly."
That's something that Bayern Munich might strive to accomplish during the upcoming summer transfer window.
What's the best thing, then? The element that might be essential to these two working well together? Their emphasis on the group.
Nagelsmann went on, "Neither of them is selfish at all in the game" (again via @iMiaSanMia). "Flo in particular may be overly selfless at times, scoring more goals on his own rather than assisting with a pass. They both work incredibly hard, and that hasn't changed in the slightest. Neither of them seems like they could lose their sense of reality. They are practical.
They play almost very well in their respective teams and practically performed well and always delivering upon expectations
