According to sources, Real Madrid custodian Andriy Lunin and the Spanish team have reached an agreement on a new, long-term contract.
After serving as Thibaut Courtois' backup for the previous four years, Lunin is now in the final year of his current contract and was predicted to leave on a free transfer the following summer in quest of regular first-team play.
After the Belgian suffered an injury last summer, Lunin overcame opposition from loanee Kepa Arrizabalaga to make 31 appearances across all competitions. However, when Courtois returned, Lunin was left out of the Champions League final.
Although Lunin's planned departure from the team this year did not happen, MARCA reports that he has now agreed to a new four-year contract instead of letting his current one expire.
Concerning his long-term role in the team, Lunin had put the renewal talks on hold during the summer. However, it looks like he was persuaded to stay and continue his battle with Courtois, who has started every game this season.
Although Lunin may still be sold in 2025 if a compelling offer comes in, the Ukraine international is now concentrating on increasing his total of 48 club appearances.
The fact that Lunin has extended his contract could have a big effect on Chelsea, who welcomed back Kepa this summer after his loan ran out.
If Lunin left, Kepa wanted to return to Madrid this summer, and the Spanish team was willing to attempt to negotiate a deal. Kepa signed a new one-year contract and went on loan to Bournemouth to finish the season after no offer materialised.
