Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has been handed a six-month driving ban following two motoring offences that occurred in west Wales. The 23-year-old Argentine footballer, who played a crucial role in Argentina's 2022 World Cup victory before joining Chelsea for a British record fee of £107 million, was not present in Llanelli Magistrates' Court when the ban was imposed.
The incidents leading to Fernandez's ban involved a Porsche Cayenne, which was allegedly involved in two separate traffic violations. The first incident occurred in November 2023, when the vehicle was reported to have driven through a red light on Church Street in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire. The second incident took place in December 2023, when the same car was allegedly caught speeding on Carmarthen Road in Swansea.
Although it was not proven that Fernandez was the driver on either occasion, the court heard that he failed to respond to requests from Dyfed-Powys Police and South Wales Police for information about the driver of the vehicle. This lack of response led to Fernandez being found guilty of failing to identify the driver in both instances.
As a result, the court imposed six penalty points for each offence, leading to an immediate driving ban due to the accumulation of penalty points. Fernandez already had nine points on his licence from previous speeding offences. In addition to the driving ban, Fernandez was ordered to pay a total of £3,020 in fines and costs, which includes £2,000 in fines, £210 in court costs, and an £800 surcharge. He has been given until 9 October to make the payment.
This ban adds to the challenges Fernandez faces off the pitch, as he continues his career at Chelsea following his record-breaking transfer to the Premier League club. Despite his success on the field, this incident serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with being a high-profile athlete.
