FORMER SUPREME COURT JUSTICE JULIUS ANSAH PASSES AWAY AT 74

Justice Julius Ansah a reputable judge of the Ghanaian legal structure passed on, in September 2024 at the age of 74. Justice Ansah has been on the Roll of the Supreme Court of Ghana since October 2004 up to the time of his retirement and after that has been a member of this Supreme Court of Ghana for sixteen years. It can therefore be said that his death marked the closure of an era of the Ghanaian judiciary because of the immense respect towards his contribution to justice as well as the promotion of values in law.


Early Life and Education

Justice Julius Ansah was born in 1950 he attended his first prayer at Ofori Panin Senior High School and later transfer to Prempeh College-one of the best schools in Ghana. When they identified the way and set him for the law profession, they provided him with an amazing exposure to a lucrative line of work in the legal practice. He later took law which he also passed with a lot of hardships and intelligence thus earning the esteem of fellow learners, hats off.  


Judicial Career

In October 2004 Justice Ansah was appointed to the Supreme Court through a nomination by the then president John Agyekum Kufuor. His appointment was therefore based on professionalism in law and a demonstrated passion towards the respect of the rule of law in Ghana. Justice Ansah was consequently able to be immoveable on the principles of the provisions of the 1992 constitution of the country and equally made the fear of God rounded up in delivering justice in Ghana.

In his tenure of sixteen years as a bone fide judge he was able to handle some of the important cases which shaped the future of the Ghanaian legal system. His decisions on constitutional issues, human rights and criminal justice systems have shaped legal system in Ghana. He was also renowned in his mastery of legal intricacies and dealing with them with such clear and profound judgment.

 

Legacy

According to the experiences, reflections and views of other practitioners and scholars, Justice Julius Ansah had practices which involved contribution to the legal field other to that area of his practice. He also committed a lot of time in mentoring young lawyers and judges which helped in the molding of the junior legal experts in Ghana. He was regarded by many as a strong legal figure in the justice system, a man of great integrity and fair-mindedness whose work shall be of great reference to the future legions of legal brains in the country.


Justice Ansah’s demise has been received with regret in Ghana, as many people including Justice colleagues, legal fraternity and other citizens have mourned his passing for his positive impacts to the members’ bench and to Ghana in general.

As one of the most prominent legal brains in Ghana is laid to a rest, it is iron clad that his work in the circuit will stand the test of time, therefore, placing him firmly in the annals of legal history of the nation.
