Erik ten Hag responds to old opponent Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United 'ambition' remark with Saudi insults. Former Manchester United player Ronaldo, who now plays for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, argued that Ten Hag should not openly state that United cannot compete in the Premier League or Champions League.

Erik ten Hag has dismissed Cristiano Ronaldo's remark that he lacks ambition for claiming Manchester United cannot win major titles. Ronaldo, who fell out catastrophically with Ten Hag during his second tenure at United, resulting in his painful departure, has renewed his enmity with his old manager.

Former Manchester United player Ronaldo, who now plays for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, argued that Ten Hag should not openly state that United cannot compete in the Premier League or Champions League.Responding to Ronaldo's accusation that Ten Hag indicated United couldn't compete for the top trophies, the Old Trafford manager responded: "No, he said this, if you read the story carefully.

"He is far away in Saudi Arabia, far away from Manchester, so everyone can and is entitled to have an opinion, so it's okay. "We'll see where we stand in May next year. It's early in the season, so it's all about winning trophies, finishing as high as possible in the league, and doing everything we can to win every game. We'll see where we are in May."

Ten Hag is under increasing pressure after United lost two games in a row, dropping to 14th place in the Premier League. United head to Southampton on Saturday, and Ten Hag admits the club needs to get back to winning ways to stop their early season skid.

"It doesn't impact me, I know in the process where we are," Ten Hag was saying. "And I know what we need to do and where we're heading. "As I previously stated, we are still in a transitional stage and must integrate a large number of young players into the club. We still need to deal with injuries and get people back on the team. "Before anyone thinks of excuses, we must win every game. I am aware of this. The team knows this, and it makes no difference who is available. We will concentrate on each game and approach it with the idea that we must win.
