Rodri 'has already won' the Ballon d'Or 2024, despite Vinicius Jr being hoped. Rodri, the Manchester City and Spain midfielder, has a solid claim to the Ballon d'Or after winning the Premier League and Euro 2024, but Vinicius Jr stands in his way.
Rodri says he feels like he's already won the Ballon d'Or because of the huge support from the public. The Manchester City midfielder is one of the favourites to win the award after the shortlist was published earlier this month. Rodri played a key role in City's fourth consecutive Premier League victory last season, and he later helped Spain defeat England to win Euro 2024.
Rodri has not lost a 90-minute match since March 2023, when Spain lost against Scotland in Euro 2024 qualifying. His cause has been supported by Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker, although Real Madrid's Vincius Junior is the bookies' favourite after scoring 24 goals and assisting 11 times in 39 games in 2023/24 as the club won La Liga and the Champions League.
"People say I'll fight Vinicius, who I admire. "I believe he is an excellent player," Rodri told ESPN. "Just being in the conversation makes me very proud of the job I've done. It will depend a little on what people value [when voting], what they believe, and there are a lot of guys who deserve to win, so we'll see what happens.
"But imagine that when I walk down the street, people tell me, 'You're going to win the Ballon d'Or, you deserve it.'" And that implies I'm already a winner with this. People telling me that I can be the best player in the world is fantastic to me. I never imagined this happening. "But once you are in this situation, this position, because a lot of years of work, a lot of trust on yourself and the help of all the people, you think about this award and being there is just unbelievable."
