Sitaram Yechury, a prominent Indian politician is the general Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) who died on 12th September 2024 at the age of 72. Yechury, who was staggered with a chronic respiratory disorder for the past few years, was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi in August 2024 with complications of pneumonia of whom he breathed his last. Thus, Yechury’s death symbolises the culmination of a major political epoch in India as he was an active politician who was always against the central government.
Sitaram Yechury was born in 1952; he was a student politic activist and has right from his political activism, been a militant of the left-wing in India. Of particular interest was his defense of workmen and a clear hard-core Marxist principle as a worker. He rose to this position in the CPI(M), made him a prominent persons in the party and his contributions where he among the key policy makers in the party serving as the General Secretary of the party at one time.
Later in 2005 Yechury was elected as Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha, the Indian Upper House of Parliament from West Bengal. He remained in this capacity up to the year 2017 wherein he became more vociferous on various matters of concern including labourrelation and foreign politics among others. He was particularly famous in giving fluent speeches as well as in mediating between different factions of the opposition in the Parliament.
However; Yechury was not without controversy. In 2020, during Delhi riots he and activist Yogendra Yadav were named in a supplementary chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police for being accused of fanning violence during protest. Yechury categorically denied the charges describing it as political vendetta by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He said that the charges were politically motivated as BJP government was targeting opposition parties. Still, these accusations did not reduce Yechury’s authority in Indian politics – the man loyal to his principles.
Yechury’s health deteriorated in early August 2024 when he was admitted at the AIIMS Delhi hospital due to pneumonia like chest infection. His condition deteriorated in September, then he was put on a mechanical ventilator. However, despite all the caregivers’ attempts, Yechury succumbed to death on September 12, 2024.
Like me, Yechury had been a firm believer in giving back to society and so in a way of servicing society even in his last moments, the body was thereafter handed over to AIIMS Delhi for medical teaching and research purposes.
A bitter fact is that Sitaram Yechury passed away, thus people lost one of the most prominent political leaders of the Indian Left. He was loyal to Marxism to his death raising campaign for the poor and the defenceless in the society. Yechury was the leading light in the CPI(M) and his passing will be greatly felt in the political domain in India more so by the political players in the country.
A part of Yechury’s legacy in Indian politics includes the concerns he championed such as those of the workers and social justice.
