when taking over as Heerenveen's manager in May when Kees van Wonderen left, former Manchester United player Robin van Persie was defeated 9-1 in just his fourth game in charge.
In the Eredivisie on Saturday, AZ Alkmaar thrashed the Dutch team, with Luuk Brouwers scoring Heerenveen's lone goal of the match.
This was Van Persie's fourth game as manager; his previous one saw them defeat NAC Breda. As the squad begins their 2024–25 campaign, they have already racked up four points from as many games.
After the devastating loss, the former striker evaluated the match and said he wasn't "traumatised" by the outcome.
"This is difficult," he said to the press. There will be many hiccups in your profession. This was one huge lump. This match taught us a few more lessons than we usually would have. This is a football-related aspect. This has not traumatised me or my players in any way.
Your goal is to maximise your potential. That entails sinking and then rising again."
The striker enjoyed eight years in north London during his productive Premier League career at Arsenal before moving to Old Trafford.
"I understand how it functions as well," he added. "I once suffered an 8-2 loss to Manchester United. That wasn't enjoyable either, but that's a necessary aspect of playing football. Everybody's journey to become the finest version of themselves includes this.
In these kinds of circumstances, it's about being proud of each other and yourself and sticking your chest out. That's what we need to keep doing."
