The music industry has been left with a huge loss as Roli Mosimann, a Swiss-born American drummer, electronic musician and record producer passed on September 15, 2024 at age 68 after stage IV lung cancer. With his work on Swans to his production of some of the most innovative rock albums of the decade and his work in industrial and electronic music, Roli Mosimann’s taste impact would stay with multiple genres for the whole decades to come.
Roli Mosimann was born 7 November 1955 in Thurgau Switzerland and his musical career begun in the center of Europe and in the New York City he was the member of no wave band Swans as a drummer. Roli Mosimann's punk industrial hardcore drumming was instrumental in shaping the groups raw early sound that was a major factor in the bands high energy stage shows that made the group one of the leaders in the 80’s hardcore/intermediate band movement. Well let me tell you this if Swans had a volume slider on their shows they would be permanently set to full blast.
Aside from Swans, Roli Mosimann collaborated with JG Thirlwell from Foetus band to create more experimental glorious music under the project called Wiseblood. Roli Mosimann's desire for Rock N Roll while playing in the band took him to the studio to record other bands and thus initiated his record production career, in which his diverse and cutting edge style and creativity made him the producer of choice.
With Faith No More, primarily with Album of the Year that was awarded an accolade of the year by the music critics Roli Mosimann was involved in a series of pioneering projects, the same can be stated about The The’s Mind Bomb. These musical collaborations resulted from Roli Mosimann's integration of the club scene’s musical styles with experimental rock and pop polymorphism, a list of artists that ranged from Skinny Puppy, an industrial band, Celtic Frost, a metal band and New Order, a pop band.
While production work was not always without his hitches—Skinny Puppy and Marilyn Mansion both fired him half way through the project, Reznor’s influence could still be seen in the progression of the records. As many great productions require greatclosed minded leadership as many reactions as views while in an Industry of egoistic and creative personalities Roli Mosimann continued to be the non-heated artist behind the scenes.
The Unicode which was released in the early 2000’s by the Polish band Miloopa is to some extent, one of Roli Mosimann’s later productions as he experimented with further sound innovations while collaborating with Mayer and contributing to engineering and mixing. Roli Mosimann's potential to perform in so many various styles, ranging from industrial to electronic, metal and pop – made him a universal musician who can fit both the margins of avantgarde experimentation and mainstream consumers’ appetite.
This is something I feel only those who knew Roli Mosimann as a trailblazer of sound would understand if they saw him die in Wroc?aw. Swans to the Faith No More polish to the base of Nine Inch Nails to the masterpiece of Paramore, Roli Mosimann's work will forever be etched in countless more records that will inevitably continue pushing young generations of musicians.
