The SA entertainment industry
has been robbed of one of the most defiant characters who was Sello Motloung
who died on 15th September 2024 at the age of 53. Best known for his roles in
hit films like Gangster’s Paradise: For stage and Tv shows among them Matatiele
and Blood Psalms, Sello Motloung was one of the most celebrated actors on stage and
TV shows because of his unique interesting performances and range of work.
Sello Motloung who was born on
4th of November of 1970 acted professionally for more than thirty years of his
life, beginning with early 1990s, and he performed in theatre, television, and
cinema. Sello Motloung was a regular cast in various notorious South African productions
that include Backstage in which he played the character Mpumi and The Lab where
he also played the character Nkabi.
Despite being young Sello Motloung found himself in the lime light easily because of his love in acting. In 1998
he was honored with M-Net All-Africa Film Awards nomination for Best Supporting
Actor acting in Chikin Biznis. Over the years Sello Motloung has acted in several drama
productions internationally for instance, Human Cargo, a mini-series based in
Canada and the Britain’s ITV drama popularly known as Wild at Heart.
However, Sello Motloung was not
limited to stage and screen acting; he acted in several other stage plays that
received positive acclaim including The Good Woman of Sharkville in 1996 for
which he received a Vita Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and Master
Harold and the Boys in 1998 to mention but a few.
However, the coronavirus
pandemic slightly set back the actors’ career through various project freezes,
but the year saw him return panting in Lithapo and The Estate where he
portrayed Thapelo and Elias Nkosi, respectively. These series also demonstrated
the dedication and persistence Sello Motloung had of going on with acting despite the odds
stacked against him.
The death of Sello Motloung is hard
believed given the fact that he contributed immensely towards the development
of South Africa through arts. Everyone would agree with the sentiments that Sello Motloung's
talent, efforts and contribution to the local and global music industry will be
greatly missed. Sello Motloung's performances span a range from Jerusalema to Ring of Lies
and those are but only but a few of many unforgettable performances that he
gave and which many aspiring actors will endeavour to emulate in the future. It
is a sad day for us, still all his wonderful performances that he left on the
screen and stage will remain.
