Legendary Premier League player Alan Shearer has remained unwavering in his criticism of Marcus Rashford despite being pleased with the forward's performance in Manchester United's victory against Southampton over the weekend.
In the 3-0 triumph over St. Mary's, Rashford scored his first goal of the year, putting Erik ten Hag's team on display in a way that may have been lacking thus far in 2024–25.
The footballer has been under a lot of criticism for his play since the start of the previous season due to a sharp decline in form after scoring thirty goals in 2022–2023.
The record-setting 260-goal Premier League scorer Shearer stated that while criticism of Rashford has been deserved, it won't be necessary if he keeps up his Southampton level of play.
Shearer responded to Gary Lineker's observation on The Rest is Football that Rashford has been offended by criticism that he views as unfai
You know, he has really high standards for himself. He's a really excellent player who has a big deal at Manchester United, but his performance recently hasn't been as good as it can be. And in that situation, as a well-known player at a major football team, you will face criticism.
"And he did, but you know, he doesn't get called out for performances like that [against Southampton]. When he's rushing and tracking back, when he's taking players on and finishing the play. He had a great player's appearance. For the remainder of the season, he must now perform that."
Due to Rashford's decline in performance from the previous season, England was not included in the roster for Euro 2024.
Shearer went on, "There's a reason he wasn't in the England team.
"Pundits weren't the only ones who attacked him. There's no denying that he has potential, but it needs to be consistent as other players have surpassed him from where he was a few years ago. That needs to happen every week, not just when Southampton is involved. After that, he won't face criticism. Not too complicated, is it?
