Gary Shaw, who was a key part of Aston Villa's 1982 European Cup-winning side, has tragically passed away at the age of 63 after suffering a head injury from a fall.

Aston Villa's legendary player, Gary Shaw, has sadly passed away at the age of 63. The sportsman was in a critical condition in the hospital after suffering a head injury from a fall, passing away 'peacefully' surrounded by his family. Gary reportedly suffered a fall in his home and was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately didn't make it.

He is widely celebrated as one of the greatest forwards in Aston Villa's 150-year history, having made 213 appearances and scored 79 goals for the club. Born in Kingshurst, Gary spent ten years at his childhood club after beginning his apprenticeship with Villa in 1977. In 1981, he played a crucial role in Villa's League Championship victory, scoring 18 goals and earning the title of PFA Young Player of the Year.

He also played a significant part in the club's European triumph the following year. The striker participated in seven out of eight matches leading up to the final with Bayern, where he started in attack alongside match-winner Peter Withe. However, his career was later hampered by injury problems, and he left the club in 1988.

A number of tributes for Gary have poured in, with Aston Villa sharing a lengthy statement on their website and to X. The club said: "Aston Villa Football Club is deeply shocked and profoundly saddened to learn that Gary Shaw, one of our European Cup-winning heroes, has passed away."

While former Villa player Brian Little paid tribute to Gary on X, saying, "Gave Shawsy my number 8 shirt when I retired. He took it to another level... R.I.P. xx.".

Ex-player David Speedie also expressed his sadness, saying, "Really sad to hear Villa legend Gary Shaw has passed away. He was a fantastic footballer who was a worthy winner of club football's greatest prize. My thoughts go out to the family and friends of Gary at this difficult time."

Villa fans have also taken to social media to pay their respects, with one posting: "RIP to a true club legend and one of our own, the great Gary Shaw. It won't be the same against Bayern Munich without you. RIP HEITS."

Another added: "RIP Gary Shaw. A true Villa legend and one of my childhood heroes. A third posted: "Immensely sad news for all Villa supporters and every football fan who remembers the magical era he played in. He was some player.
