Reds record biggest win under Ten Hag

17 September 2024 20:57

Manchester United recorded the biggest win of Erik ten Hag's reign with the 7-0 home defeat of Barnsley in the Carabao Cup third round.

The Reds were 3-0 up at half-time thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, either side of Antony's penalty.

Garnacho grabbed his second, from Christian Eriksen's excellent pass, and Rashford soon followed suit, with another clinical finish, thus ensuring new territory for United under the boss.

It was the first time we have hit five goals in a single game since Ten Hag took over and there was more to come.

Eriksen, who already had that assist to his name, added a brace to cap a fine team performance, with the floodgates well and truly open.

This is also our record-ever win in the League Cup, with the previous best being the 7-2 hammering of Newcastle United in October 1976, with Gordon Hill hitting a hat-trick.

The margin of victory mirrored that achieved in our only top-flight meeting with the Tykes, with the home win in October 1997 featuring three strikes for Andy Cole.

The biggest wins previously under Erik were the 4-1 victories against Real Betis and Chelsea.

In March 2023, the Spanish side were overcome in the Europa League, with Rashford and Antony among the scorers that night too. In terms of domestic competition, the convincing success against Chelsea came in the May of that year, with Joao Felix's late consolation preventing it from being the stand-alone win.

We have also hit four on five other occasions under the boss but the Reds really cut loose to ease into round four of the competition.
