Priscilla Dunn – born on October 19, 1943 – died on September 17, 2024, at the age of 80; Alabama mourns the death of a hard-working civil servant. Priscilla Dunn was born on October 8, 1943, and was a politician for more than twenty years; she stayed true to the electors and was a lady with great faith in the social justice.

A member of the Democratic Party, Priscilla Dunn was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 1998 until 2009 shifting to the Alabama Senate, where she represented the 19th district until her retirement in 2022. Priscilla Dunn's years of service can be summarized by the fact that she advocated for education and volunteered in the community, which was hers as a Homeless Education Coordinator. Priscilla Dunn was aware of the problems in families in her district and made every effort to help them finding ways that would help them solve their problems in practical ways.

During her work with senate, Priscilla Dunn's championing of education and social issues made her well acclaimed from her fellows on both the Democrats and the Republicans. Even though more people might subconsciously feel heartlessness of her in this field, it was stated that she was running Alabama politics, saying it was like ‘trying to figure out how to put together IKEA furniture without a manual’, meaning that she was able to find a solution for nearly any problem she encountered.

As for education, Priscilla Dunn also had a successful schools’ background to stand for. Priscilla Dunn graduated from the Alabama State University with the Bachelor of Science and proceeded to acquire Master of Arts from the University of Montevallo hence being knowledgeable and perceptive to stand against the challenges that surrounded her. Priscilla Dunn had immense love for education and she used to insist on the young people to study hard, she was quoted saying “Education is the only thing no one can take from you–if you can’t find it, it is probably in your head!”

Apart from the political life, Priscilla Dunn was a family oriented woman, who was married to Grover Dunn and had a daughter named Karen. Finally and most importantly, Priscilla Dunn's family was her support and she enjoyed every moment she spent with them: she combined politic with pleasure asserting that good politic is at least as entertaining as a family reunion!

Fortunately, as we celebrate the life of Priscilla Dunn, we are celebrating the life of a woman who fought for change and stood up for the less privileged. Priscilla Dunn will remain as a role model for the future generations of leaders in Alabama as well as other parts of the world. In a country and a world where the political climate is quite polarized, Priscilla Dunn’s speech is a wake-up call for people to be considerate and educated and to set a positive change in their respective communities. Goodnight, sweet Princess; you will be missed but you made a dent in many hearts.
