Alan Shearer correctly captures the crucial difference between Mikel Arteta and Erik ten Hag. Mikel Arteta has to be considered a success when compared to Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, according to Alan Shearer, despite the Arsenal manager only winning one trophy so far.
Alan Shearer has attributed Mikel Arteta's elevated status to Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, despite just having an FA Cup to his name: Arsenal have demonstrated their ability to challenge Manchester City in the league. While Ten Hag has won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, compared to Arteta's one medal from the latter, former Newcastle striker Shearer believes the Gunners' head coach has already proven his worth.
And, with Arsenal, who face City on Sunday, again anticipated to be the closest rival to the Premier League champions, United may only find themselves fighting for fourth place again. Shearer, speaking to Betfair, said: "I understand that Arteta has only won one FA Cup in his time there, but there is no doubt that there is progress within the football club, and they are always progressing. When we compare that to Erik Ten Hag and Manchester United, we can see how much pressure Arteta would be under if Arsenal finished eighth or ninth, like Manchester United did last season, despite winning the FA Cup. "These teams must qualify for the Champions League each season and be competitive.
"City have won the last four titles and they're going for a fifth which is unbelievable, but Man United have been nowhere near competing Man City in terms of league positions and that is the big difference in why Arteta has been a success at Arsenal, compared to Ten Hag at Manchester United." Arteta signed a new deal last week, only 72 hours before winning the North London Derby. And Shearer added: "On the eve of the [Tottenham] game, Mikel Arteta signed a new contract, and his time at Arsenal can be considered a success because they have improved and continue to improve." They're working extremely hard to stay up with the juggernaut Manchester City.
" Liverpool managed to cross the finish line and win the title a few years ago, but we're talking about a genius in Pep Guardiola, and the financial backing he has at Manchester City, so when you put all of that together, it's practically hard to get through. "That is the task for Liverpool, Arsenal, and any other team aiming to compete with Manchester City. "It's a very difficult job."
