In a world where everyone strives to be noticed, to stand out, and to be chosen for success or recognition, the Christian faith offers a path that defies conventional wisdom. Being set apart doesn’t come from self-promotion, flashy displays, or seeking attention. Instead, it comes from a quiet but powerful set of principles that reflect the heart of God. If you long to be the “chosen one,” these are the steps you need to take.
The first and most essential step is humility. While society often rewards arrogance and pride, scripture teaches that true exaltation comes from a humble heart. James 4:10 advises, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.” This isn’t about belittling yourself but about recognising your need for God’s guidance in every aspect of life. When you embrace humility, you create space for God to work in ways that elevate you far beyond your capabilities.
Humility is closely tied to obedience—doing what is right, even when it’s difficult or unnoticed. One of the greatest examples of this is found in the life of King David. Before he was chosen to be king, David was simply a shepherd, faithfully tending his father’s sheep. He wasn’t in the palace, nor was he fighting for recognition. Yet, God chose him because of his heart and his willingness to serve faithfully in the unseen places. In 1 Samuel 16:7, God says, “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” True obedience, even in the small things, is what sets you apart in the eyes of God.
Integrity is another critical step on this path. In a world where cutting corners and compromising values seem like shortcuts to success, the Bible consistently upholds the importance of integrity. Proverbs 10:9 teaches, “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.” If you want to be chosen, you must stand firm in your principles, living with honesty and moral clarity even when no one else is watching. Integrity builds trust, and trust is foundational to being chosen by both God and others.
Service is another key element. Jesus Himself said in Mark 9:35, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.” The paradox of Christian leadership is that it begins with serving others. To be chosen by God is not about gaining power or recognition; it’s about using your gifts and opportunities to serve those around you. Jesus set the ultimate example by washing His disciples’ feet, showing that greatness in God’s kingdom comes through humility and service. When you take on the posture of a servant, you stand out in a world focused on self-advancement.
Another powerful way to be set apart is through faithfulness. In Luke 16:10, Jesus says, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.” God often chooses those who have proven themselves faithful in the small tasks, the unseen work, and the moments when no one is around to applaud. It’s in these moments that character is built and prepared for bigger responsibilities. Faithfulness in your relationships, work, and spiritual life makes you a vessel God can use for greater purposes.
Finally, prayer is the thread that ties everything together. When you live a life rooted in prayer, you remain in constant connection with God, aligning your heart with His will. Jesus often withdrew to quiet places to pray, showing that even the Son of God needed regular communion with the Father to sustain His mission. Prayer isn’t about asking to be chosen but about seeking God’s wisdom and guidance. As you deepen your prayer life, you will find that God begins to open doors and place you in positions of influence that you could never have reached on your own.
So, how do you become the chosen one? It’s not by following the world’s ways of self-promotion or striving for attention. It’s by embodying the virtues of humility, obedience, integrity, service, faithfulness, and prayer. When you align your life with these Christian principles, you position yourself to be chosen—not by the standards of the world, but by the hand of God.
And when God chooses you, no one can take that away. You may not always be in the spotlight, but your influence will reach far beyond what you can see. Just like David, Esther, and countless others who walked this path before you, you will find yourself set apart for a unique and powerful purpose.
