'I'm a Manchester United legend- I believe Liverpool will have something to say in the title fight
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes Liverpool has a squad capable of competing for the title this season. Arne Slot began his bid to fill Jurgen Klopp's boots flawlessly this season, winning each of his first three Premier League games without allowing a goal and defeating rivals United 3-0.
However, many questioned their status as real title challengers after Callum Hudson-Odoi scored to help Nottingham Forest win all three points at Anfield. Though Slot's men recovered to defeat Bournemouth 3-0 in their previous league game, the performances of Arsenal and Manchester City make it impossible to pick anyone else for the title.Scholes, a Red Devils legend, is doing just that, predicting that the Merseyside club will have a fighting chance when May arrives.
"I think Liverpool might have something to say about the title race this year," Scholes said during The Overlap Fan Debate, sponsored by Sky Bet. "When I look at their forward players, I think they have five or six good players." Slot already had a strong attacking lineup, including in-form Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, and Diogo Jota, before bringing in Federico Chiesa. The 26-year-old Italian joined the Reds for a bargain price from Juventus this summer and made his Champions League debut in a 3-1 win away to AC Milan. He provides another option for Slot to a group that Scholes sees as having minimal fragility.
"Seeing Liverpool firsthand, what a squad of players, I see very few weaknesses," Scholes added. "The only one we thought about was possibly if Virgil van Dijk or Ibrahima Konaté got injured in the centre half position." Stalwart Joel Matip just left the club after his contract expired, and while Joe Gomez may provide cover, the only other centre-half in Slot's lineup is teenager Jarell Quansah.
