Hon. Abanga Abdulai, Member of Parliament for Binduri and the Deputy Minister for Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development, responded swiftly to a tragic incident that occurred in the Yalugu community, near Bazua, Binduri District. The event, which took place on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, involved a fatal canoe accident that claimed the lives of two women. They were swept away by the strong currents of the White Volta River as they attempted to cross it with their farm produce. Six individuals were aboard the canoe when the tragedy struck.

Hon. Abanga Abdulai, clearly moved by the incident, described it as both "shocking and unfortunate." He expressed deep concern over the risks posed by the crossing of the river, particularly during the rainy season when water levels rise and create dangerous conditions. The MP emphasized the urgent need for enhanced safety measures to protect the lives of residents who depend on the river for transportation and livelihood.

As a show of solidarity and immediate support, the MP dispatched his aide, Mr. Asaah Jacob, to visit the affected community, accompanied by Mr. Daniel, the District Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO). Together, they traveled to the site of the accident to meet with the bereaved families and others impacted by the canoe mishap. The visit was not only to offer condolences but also to assess the situation on the ground and understand the challenges that local residents face in crossing the river during the rainy season.

In his interaction with the affected families, Mr. Asaah, on behalf of Hon. Abanga Abdulai, conveyed the MP’s heartfelt sympathies and assurances of continued support. The MP’s team acknowledged the dangerous conditions that contributed to the tragedy and reiterated their commitment to finding long-term solutions to prevent future occurrences. Recognizing that many residents rely on crossing the river to transport goods, particularly farm produce, the MP’s intervention was timely and focused on enhancing the safety of these river crossings.

As part of this initiative, the MP made a practical and immediate contribution to improve local water safety. Four life jackets were donated to the community, intended for use by individuals who frequently navigate the river. The distribution of life jackets is aimed at reducing the risk of accidents during river crossings, especially when the water currents are strong. The donation, though modest, is a significant first step in promoting safety and protecting lives.

Hon. Abanga Abdulai’s response to the tragedy in Yalugu is part of his broader commitment to serving the people of Binduri. His leadership during this difficult time highlights the importance of being responsive to the needs of the community and addressing safety concerns in a proactive manner. The MP has pledged to continue working with relevant stakeholders, including NADMO and local authorities, to explore more comprehensive solutions, such as the construction of safer crossing points or the provision of additional safety equipment.

The tragic loss of the two women has left a profound impact on the Yalugu community, and the MP’s actions reflect his deep sense of responsibility to his constituents. His intervention is a reminder that public service extends beyond policy-making; it is about being present for the people in times of need and ensuring that their safety and well-being are prioritized. The provision of life jackets is a small but significant step in the right direction, signaling a commitment to safeguarding the lives of those who depend on the White Volta River for their livelihood.

Hon. Abanga Abdulai’s actions following the incident underscore his dedication to the people of Binduri and his determination to address the challenges they face. His leadership in the wake of this tragedy has been marked by compassion, urgency, and a focus on practical solutions. The MP’s swift response has brought some measure of comfort to the grieving families and reassured the community that their concerns are being heard and addressed. The message is clear: safety and service to the people remain top priorities for Hon. Abanga Abdulai.
