The founder and flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party, Madam Akua Donkor, addressed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Tuesday. This meeting provided her with a platform to share her thoughts on the ongoing processes and regulations implemented by the Electoral Commission in preparation for the upcoming December 7 elections.
In her remarks, Akua Donkor commended the Electoral Commissioner for her dedication and hard work. She emphasized the importance of respecting the EC and its leadership, urging all political parties to acknowledge the efforts made by the Commissioner. "We must appreciate the work being done by the Electoral Commission," she stated, highlighting the need for unity and cooperation among political entities.
However, Akua Donkor did not shy away from addressing the NDC directly. She specifically urged the party to cease its attacks on the Electoral Commission and its chairperson, Jean Mensah. According to her, the NDC has consistently criticized the EC since Mensah's appointment by President Akufo-Addo. She pointed out that the party has contested nearly every decision made by the Commission, creating an atmosphere of hostility.
Furthermore, Akua Donkor accused the NDC of resorting to violence in their opposition to the EC, referencing specific incidents of unrest that have occurred in areas like Kasoa, where violence resulted in severe injuries and even fatalities. Her comments highlighted the need for a more peaceful and constructive approach to political discourse, particularly as the nation moves closer to the elections.
The IPAC meeting, taking place at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, is a crucial gathering that includes all political candidates participating in the December elections. The leadership of the NDC has requested that the discussions be broadcast live to enhance transparency and allow the public to engage with the electoral process in real-time. This call for transparency reflects a growing demand for credible and fair elections, reinforcing the importance of public trust in the electoral system.
As the political landscape in Ghana continues to evolve, Akua Donkor's statements serve as a reminder of the need for collaboration and respect among party leaders. The upcoming elections are not just a test of political strength, but also an opportunity for all parties to demonstrate their commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law. In a time of heightened political tension, fostering dialogue and understanding among different factions will be essential for ensuring a peaceful electoral process.
