Ghanaian rapper Ruth Eno Adjoa Amankwah, widely recognized as Eno Barony, recently shared a revealing story about her struggles with her music career and her family's expectations. During an interview on Agenkwa FM, the artist, known for her hit song "Soja Go Soja Come," disclosed that she had made a solemn promise to her parents, swearing on the Bible that she would abandon her pursuit of music.
Eno explained that her father was particularly unsupportive of her decision to become a musician, which led her to hide her passion from him. She recalled how, at the beginning of her music journey, she kept her aspirations a secret from her father. Even when he eventually discovered her involvement in the industry, she felt compelled to lie in order to avoid conflict. Reflecting on her time at Kumasi Polytechnic, Eno said, “I had to promise the whole family with a Bible that I wouldn’t do rap anymore.” This promise, however, did not last long, as she admitted that shortly after enrolling in the school, she joined KFM’s freestyle sessions, contradicting her earlier commitment.
Despite gaining recognition and being in the public eye, Eno revealed that she struggled with self-doubt about her abilities as an artist. She emphasized that, at the time, she didn’t truly believe in her talent or potential. “Music was just a passion. I didn’t see myself becoming a top female rapper,” she stated. Instead of feeling confident in her skills, she often sought validation from her fans and fellow musicians. “It was people who used to tell me that I was good, but frankly speaking, I didn’t see myself in that way. I used to look down on myself because I was timid,” she admitted.
Eno Barony’s journey highlights the challenges many artists face when pursuing their dreams, especially when family expectations clash with personal aspirations. Her story resonates with those who have experienced the weight of external pressures and self-doubt, illustrating the internal battle that can accompany the pursuit of one's passion. As she continues to evolve as an artist, Eno’s reflections offer insight into her resilience and determination to carve out her own path in the music industry, despite the obstacles she has faced.
