Prodigy was an American rapper and one half of the iconic hip-hop duo Mobb Deep, alongside Havoc. Born Albert Johnson on November 2, 1974, in Hempstead, New York, Prodigy grew up in a musical family with connections to jazz and soul music. He emerged as one of the most influential voices in the 1990s East Coast rap scene.

Mobb Deep gained widespread recognition with their 1995 album The Infamous, which featured gritty lyrics and dark beats, capturing the reality of street life in New York City. The album included hit tracks like “Shook Ones Pt. II” and “Survival of the Fittest,” solidifying Prodigy’s reputation for his vivid storytelling and complex rhyme schemes.

Throughout his career, Prodigy released solo albums, including H.N.I.C. (2000), while continuing to collaborate with major figures in the rap industry. His unique, often introspective style set him apart as an influential lyricist. He was known for his raw, uncompromising delivery and his ability to depict life’s hardships in a deeply personal way.

Prodigy also became an author, publishing My Infamous Life in 2011, a memoir detailing his career, personal struggles, and battles with the law. He was open about his health issues, particularly his lifelong struggle with sickle cell anemia, which influenced both his music and his outlook on life.

Sadly, Prodigy passed away on June 20, 2017, due to complications related to his sickle cell condition, but his legacy continues to resonate within the hip-hop community.
