How Le Monde covers the Israel-Hamas war

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the devastating Israel-Hamas war, which began on October 7, 2023. Le Monde's international desk has been tirelessly reporting on this conflict, with a dozen journalists working to bring the story to light despite unprecedented challenges ¹.

The war was sparked by Hamas attacks that claimed the lives of 1,200 people, including 46 Americans and citizens of over 30 countries. Hamas also took 254 people hostage, including 12 Americans, with 101 still being held in Gaza, seven of whom are American citizens

The U.S. Department of State has been working to evacuate American citizens from Lebanon, with around 900 individuals and their family members leaving on U.S.-organized flights, and hundreds more on commercial flights ¹.

The international community continues to call for a ceasefire agreement to bring an end to the war, alleviate suffering, and promote a common future for Israelis and Palestinians with equal measures of security, dignity, opportunity, and freedom.
