John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), recently articulated his vision for Ghana’s economic future. He emphasized that a future NDC administration will focus on an Economic Transformation Agenda centered around significant structural reforms. During a visit to his farm in the Northern Region, Mahama highlighted his commitment to enhancing local tomato production as a strategy to lessen the country’s dependency on imports from neighboring nations.

This initiative is not merely about boosting production; it is a comprehensive plan to modernize agriculture, foster agri-business, and add value to local products. By doing so, Mahama believes the country can achieve import substitution, increase exports, and generate employment opportunities for Ghanaians. His approach is designed to revitalize the agricultural sector, making it a cornerstone of economic development.

In a tweet, an X user named General Marcus echoed Mahama’s sentiments, stating, “The next Mahama government will implement an Economic Transformation Agenda underpinned by structural reforms, anchored on the promotion of agricultural modernization, agri-business, and value addition for import substitution, exports, and job creation.” This comment aligns with the promises made by Mahama during the recent launch of the NDC Manifesto at the University of Education, Winneba, on August 24, 2024.

Mahama has made it clear that if he is elected in the upcoming December 7 elections, one of his first actions will be to convene a National Economic Dialogue within the first 120 days of his administration. This dialogue aims to create a four-year fiscal consolidation program, which he considers critical for rebuilding the economy and addressing the challenges that have led to its current state.

Additionally, Mahama proposed the implementation of a 24-hour economy strategy, which would involve organizing work shifts into three eight-hour segments. This initiative is intended to maximize productivity and efficiency across various sectors of the economy. His vision extends beyond agriculture; it encompasses transforming Ghana into an economy that prioritizes import substitution while simultaneously fostering an export-led growth model.

By enhancing access to public services and creating more well-paying jobs for the unemployed, Mahama aims to tackle the pressing issues of economic decline and instability. He emphasizes the urgent need to restore economic stability and foster inclusive growth that benefits all Ghanaians. His focus on job creation and economic empowerment is designed to uplift communities and provide a sustainable path forward for the nation.

In summary, Mahama’s Economic Transformation Agenda is a multi-faceted plan aimed at revitalizing various sectors of the economy through modernization, structural reforms, and strategic initiatives. He believes that with the right policies in place, Ghana can overcome its current economic challenges and build a prosperous future for all its citizens.
