An unexpected obstacle has arisen in the proposed partnership between Asante Kotoko SC and Medeama SC to play DC United in the 2024 Capital City Africa Cup.

Due to Kotoko's visa issues, Medeama and Kotoko initially decided to create a combined squad for the ceremonial match.

The goal of Medeama's players, who had valid US visas after playing in the Capital City Africa Cup the previous year, was to help Kotoko.

Kotoko supporters, however, fiercely opposed the plan, voicing their displeasure at sharing a squad with a rival team.

As a result, Medeama eventually withdrew from the match, allowing Kotoko to decide how to play DC United on their own.

This dispute demonstrates the fierce club loyalty in Ghanaian football, where supporters can become quite upset at the prospect of competitors joining forces, even for a global cause.

Kotoko is still determined to compete in the competition despite these conflicts.

The Capital City Africa Cup is an important event for Kotoko and Ghanaian football in general since it is part of Ghana Week DC 2024, which seeks to promote Ghanaian sports, music, and culture to a worldwide audience.

On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, the Kotoko team will leave Ghana for the United States in preparation for the three-day match at Audi Field in Washington, DC.

All 25 of the players invited to play for the Black Stars against Sudan have arrived at the camp.

Abu Francis and Jonas Adjei Adjetey were the final two players to arrive on Tuesday evening.

The two players arrived at the team's camp at the Alisa Hotel after landing late last night at Kotoko International Airport.

Four of the players Otto Addo invited were unable to play due to illness and injuries, so Francis and Adjetey were called up to the national squad late.

On Monday, October 7, the Black Stars set up camp with 11 players. On Tuesday morning, 12 players entered the camp.

With a full house for their final practice on Wednesday, the Black Stars will prepare for their first match against Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Thursday, October 10, with kickoff set for 16:00GMT.

Days later, on matchday four, Ghana will go to Libya to play the Falcons of Jerdiane in a rematch at the Martyrs of February Stadium.

The Black Stars have only one point out of a possible six, which puts them in third place in Group F. To improve their prospects of qualifying, Otto Addo and his team need to win the games.
