Over the years, his versatility, work ethic, and resilience have made him an integral part of his team's defensive and attacking setup. Baldock, 31, was believed to have died in his personal swimming pool in Glyfada. Other information about his demise was not immediately accessible.

The defender departed England in the summer of 2024 to join Panathinaikos in the Greek Super League, following a highly successful seven-year spell with Sheffield United in both the Championship and Premier League.

In an official announcement, the Greek Super League announced the 31-year-old's death.

The entire Super League football family is deeply saddened by the tragic death of Panathinaikos and our National Team footballer, George Baldock, and extends its condolences to his family and loved ones."

After making his senior debut with MK Dons, Baldock joined Sheffield United in 2017 and was a major part of two successive promotion campaigns, as well as 38 appearances when the Blades finished ninth in England's top flight in 2020.

The defender was a fan favourite at Bramall Lane, making 219 appearances and contributing six goals and 16 assists.

Sheffield United paid tribute to Baldock on social media: "Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock.

The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and teammates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him.

"The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George's family and friends."

Baldock, a 12-time Greece international, had played four games for Panathinaikos this season but was not selected for the national team's Nations League encounter against England at Wembley Stadium on Thursday.
