Hassan Ayariga Urges Otumfuo to Stop Galamsey in Ashanti Region

Hassan Ayariga, leader of the All People's Congress (APC), has made a passionate plea to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, urging him to take decisive action against the galamsey menace in the Ashanti region. Ayariga believes that Otumfuo's influence and authority surpass that of President Akufo-Addo, and therefore, he is better positioned to address the issue ΒΉ.

Ayariga's call to action comes amidst widespread concern over the devastating effects of galamsey on the environment, water bodies, and communities. Despite President Akufo-Addo's assurances that his government is committed to fighting galamsey, the problem persists Β² Β³.

The APC leader's statement is a testament to the growing frustration among Ghanaians regarding the government's handling of the galamsey issue. Many, including Ansah-Asare, have criticized Akufo-Addo for failing to follow through on his promise to put his presidency on the line in the fight against galamsey ⁴.

*Galamsey's Devastating Consequences*

- _Environmental degradation_: Galamsey has led to the destruction of forests, water bodies, and fertile lands.

- _Health risks_: The use of toxic chemicals in mining has contaminated water sources, posing serious health risks to communities.

- _Economic losses_: Galamsey has resulted in significant revenue losses for the government.

In light of these challenges, Ayariga's appeal to Otumfuo takes on added significance. As a revered traditional leader, Otumfuo's intervention could be a game-changer in the fight against galamsey.

*The Way Forward*

To effectively address the galamsey menace, the following steps must be taken:

- _Strengthen law enforcement_: Ensure that those involved in galamsey face the full force of the law.

- _Community engagement_: Educate and involve local communities in the fight against galamsey.

- _Alternative livelihoods_: Provide alternative economic opportunities for those engaged in galamsey.

By working together, Ghanaians can overcome the galamsey challenge and protect the country's natural resources for future generations. Will Otumfuo's influence be the turning point in this fight? Only time will tell.
