Appiah Adomako Proposes a Bold Solution to Address Law School Admission Backlog

In response to the growing concerns over the backlog of law school admissions, Appiah Adomako, a renowned education advocate and policy analyst, has proposed a groundbreaking solution to address the crisis. His suggestion comes at a time when many aspiring lawyers in the country are facing difficulties in gaining admission to the Ghana School of Law, despite meeting the necessary academic requirements.

During a recent education forum, Adomako highlighted the persistent issue of limited spaces at the Ghana School of Law and how it has led to an overwhelming number of qualified applicants being denied admission. According to him, this situation not only stifles the dreams of aspiring legal professionals but also limits the growth of the legal profession in the country.

In his proposal, Adomako called for the decentralization of legal education by allowing universities with accredited law faculties to conduct the professional law course independently. Currently, all law students seeking to practice in Ghana must pass through the Ghana School of Law for their professional legal training, creating a bottleneck due to the institution’s limited capacity. Adomako argued that if accredited universities could offer the same professional legal training, it would greatly reduce the pressure on the Ghana School of Law and provide more opportunities for students.

“We have many universities with qualified law faculties across the country. These institutions should be empowered to run the professional law course under the supervision of the General Legal Council,” Adomako said. “This way, the backlog of students waiting for admission will be cleared, and we can ensure that more competent lawyers are trained to meet the growing demand for legal services in Ghana.”

Adomako’s proposal also emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards in legal education, suggesting that the General Legal Council could continue to regulate the curriculum and conduct the final bar exams to ensure uniformity in the quality of lawyers produced by different institutions.

His proposal has sparked widespread debate among legal professionals, students, and educators, with many expressing support for the idea of decentralizing legal education. Critics, however, have raised concerns about the possible dilution of standards and the challenge of ensuring consistent quality across various institutions.

Despite the mixed reactions, Appiah Adomako remains confident that his proposed solution, if implemented, will address the long-standing issue of law school admissions and create a more inclusive and efficient legal education system in Ghana.
