Female Students Are Not Part of Your Welfare Package – NAGRAT Tells Members

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has issued a strong warning to its members, reminding them that female students are not to be considered as part of their welfare packages. The statement came during a press conference held in Accra on Wednesday, following growing concerns about allegations of inappropriate relationships between some teachers and female students in various schools.

Angel Carbonu, the President of NAGRAT, expressed deep concern over reports that some male teachers were engaging in unethical behavior by exploiting their position of authority to have inappropriate relationships with students. He emphasized that such actions not only violate the professional and ethical standards of the teaching profession but also undermine the trust between teachers, students, and the community.

"Let me make this very clear to all our members: female students are not part of your welfare package. It is completely unacceptable and unethical for any teacher to engage in such behavior. We are here to guide, protect, and educate these students, not to exploit them," Carbonu said.

The NAGRAT president reiterated the association’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism among its members and warned that any teacher found guilty of such misconduct would face severe consequences, including dismissal from the profession. He called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to strengthen its monitoring and disciplinary mechanisms to ensure that teachers adhere to the code of conduct at all times.

Several cases of teacher misconduct involving female students have surfaced in recent months, leading to calls for stricter measures to protect students from sexual exploitation and abuse. Carbonu urged schools to create safe environments where students feel comfortable reporting any form of abuse without fear of retribution.

"Teachers are role models, and we must always conduct ourselves with integrity. It is our duty to ensure that our classrooms remain places of learning, growth, and safety for all students," Carbonu added.

NAGRAT further called on its members to prioritize the welfare of their students by focusing on their educational development and personal growth. The association also encouraged teachers to engage in continuous professional development to enhance their teaching practices and maintain high ethical standards.

The statement from NAGRAT comes as part of broader efforts to address sexual misconduct in schools and reinforce the role of educators as protectors and nurturers of young minds.
