Ghana Prepares for 2024 Elections Amid Rising Political Tensions

As Ghana gears up for its 2024 general elections, political activities have intensified, with both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) pushing forward their campaigns. The stakes are high as the electoral landscape becomes increasingly charged, with both parties engaging in fierce competition to win the support of voters.

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced plans to establish over 40,000 polling stations across the country to ensure a smooth voting process. This ambitious move comes as the EC seeks to improve accessibility and reduce long waiting times for voters on election day. The Commission’s initiative underscores the importance of logistical preparedness in ensuring a credible election, particularly given the increasing political tensions.

Key political figures from both the NPP and NDC are actively involved in the campaign trail. The NDC’s former President, John Dramani Mahama, has been highly critical of the NPP's governance, especially in areas such as the economy and job creation. Mahama’s promise to revive abandoned Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) projects and E-block schools has resonated with many, especially in underserved regions where educational infrastructure is lacking.

On the other hand, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP's presidential candidate, has focused his campaign on technological advancements and economic stability. Bawumia’s agenda includes improving digital infrastructure and promoting innovation to create jobs, particularly for Ghana's youth. He recently inspected a "Digital Youth Hub" project at the University of Ghana, which aims to equip the country’s youth with digital skills to compete in the global economy.

However, the pre-election period has not been without challenges. Political analysts have raised concerns over the potential for voter suppression, particularly among Ghanaians living abroad, including those in neighboring Togo. The NDC has expressed fears that the EC may attempt to block these voters, which could influence the election outcome.

With both parties ramping up their efforts and new challenges arising, the 2024 elections are shaping up to be one of Ghana’s most competitive and closely watched in recent years. How the EC handles voter accessibility and the transparency of the process will be critical in maintaining the nation’s democratic reputation.
