Alan Kyerematen's Independent Presidential Campaign Gains Momentum

Former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen has embarked on a bold and ambitious journey toward the presidency of Ghana, contesting the 2024 general elections as an independent candidate. Kyerematen’s decision to break away from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), where he once served, has sent ripples through the political landscape. His campaign is centered on the vision of transformational leadership, aimed at breaking the status quo and delivering inclusive governance.

Kyerematen, who has long been a significant figure in Ghana’s political and economic spheres, is leading the Movement for Change, a political vehicle designed to challenge the existing political duopoly of the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). This movement represents Kyerematen’s core belief that the current political system is inadequate to meet the nation’s aspirations. By running independently, he aims to shift the political dynamics, offering Ghanaians an alternative that promises reform and new approaches to governance.

One of the most striking aspects of Kyerematen’s campaign is his commitment to gender equity. He has vowed to appoint women to 50% of the leadership positions in his government. This promise has garnered significant attention as it is a first in Ghana's political history, where the representation of women in high-level government roles has often been minimal. Kyerematen believes that empowering women in leadership will bring a fresh and balanced perspective to national development and decision-making processes.

In addition to gender equity, Kyerematen’s campaign has a strong emphasis on economic transformation. He advocates for policies that will stimulate industrial growth, create jobs, and enhance the ease of doing business in Ghana. His tenure as Trade Minister saw the launch of initiatives like the One District, One Factory (1D1F) program, aimed at boosting industrialization across Ghana. Kyerematen now seeks to scale such initiatives nationwide as part of his presidency.

While Kyerematen’s move has been met with skepticism from some political analysts, who question the viability of an independent presidential bid in Ghana’s entrenched two-party system, he remains optimistic. His campaign slogan, “Ghana Deserves Better,” resonates with voters who feel disillusioned by traditional politics. As the 2024 elections approach, Kyerematen’s independent bid is expected to shake up the political status quo, with his Movement for Change offering Ghanaians a new and bold alternative.
