Former Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has passionately appealed to the government to settle outstanding payments owing to retired lawmakers and their families. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Iddrisu expressed frustration and deep concern about the situation of former MPs: "We are dying, pay us our money."

Iddrisu's comments come amidst increasing restlessness amongst retired public servants who have waited for their pensions and gratuities. He disclosed that most of his colleagues are presently living in abject financial crisis due to the payments owed them, noting that some of them cannot afford staple food. "These former legislators devoted their lives to public service, and it is reprehensible that they have been left to struggle in their old age," he declared.

The former MP gave the example of retired persons who are facing evictions and others who have been admitted to hospitals because of their inability to pay bills. "It's a matter of urgency; many of us are in dire need, and the government must prioritize the welfare of those who served the nation," Iddrisu said.

This has become one of the most increasingly urgent unpaid benefit issues, while the retirees around the country all have something to say. The urgent call for action by Iddrisu requested the government to review the process for disbursement of pension to ensure timely payments. "This is not just about money; it's about respect and recognition for the sacrifices made by former lawmakers," he said.

Until following the outcry by Iddrisu, a government spokesperson had concurred with his concerns but cited financial constraints and structural reforms needed in the pension system. "We are working around the clock to ensure that the problem is resolved and every retiree gets what is due them," the statement added.

As Haruna Iddrisu mobilizes support for his cause, the plight of retired MPs remains a critical issue that draws attention to the bigger challenges faced by public servants in post-political life.
