The Oyo State government recently announced plans to screen 347, 304 residents for hypertension and diabetes as part of a nationwide initiative titled " Project 10 Million: Know Your Numbers, Control Your Numbers. " This campaign, aimed at early detection and prevention of these diseases, was unveiled by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, alongside other state officials.
The commissioner explained that " Project 10 Million" is a comprehensive screening effort to be conducted across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). It seeks to assess 10 million Nigerians over a seven- day period this October. The goal is to promote awareness and management of cardio- metabolic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, which are major public health concerns in Nigeria.
Highlighting the importance of the initiative, Dr. Ajetunmobi emphasized the campaign' s slogan, " Know Your Numbers, Control Your Numbers. " She noted that understanding vital health metrics, such as blood pressure and blood sugar levels, empowers individuals to take proactive measures toward their health. Early detection of these conditions can significantly reduce the risk of complications and improve long- term outcomes.
The screening will involve measuring blood pressure and blood sugar levels, as well as conducting other assessments related to cardiovascular and metabolic health. These tests are designed to provide a comprehensive picture of each participant' s health status. According to the commissioner, the process is safe and follows standard medical testing procedures. Trained healthcare workers will administer the tests at various temporary stations set up in local communities, ensuring that the screenings are accessible to everyone eligible.
The project is spearheaded by the Nigerian Health Commissioner' s Forum, in collaboration with professional health organizations, development agencies, and donors. This collaborative approach allows the project to mobilize resources and expertise effectively, ensuring that screenings are performed efficiently and reach a broad population. The commissioner emphasized that the screenings are free and open to all Nigerians aged 18 and older, with immediate test results and counseling provided on- site.
In addition to hypertension and diabetes screenings, the initiative will educate participants about the importance of regular health check- ups and the need to maintain healthy lifestyle habits. With this initiative, the Oyo State government hopes to reduce the prevalence of these diseases, which are often preventable through lifestyle changes and early intervention.
The Oyo State screening is part of a larger health agenda aimed at improving public health across Nigeria. Similar efforts have been launched to tackle various health issues, including vision impairment, child blindness, and cholera outbreaks. The government' s commitment to these causes demonstrates a broader strategy to address multiple health challenges facing the country.
Overall, " Project 10 Million" is a significant step forward in Nigeria' s public health efforts, offering residents an opportunity to understand and manage their health proactively. By providing free and accessible screenings, the Oyo State government is helping residents take charge of their health and make informed decisions to prevent serious health complications.
