The most talked about issue in the country currently aside the December elections is illegal mining. Many Ghanaians have risen to bemoan the effects that illegal mining is having on Ghana' s water bodies. The Ghana Water Company Limited and other environmental agencies have called on the Akufo- Addo led government to act or risk the country importing water in some few years come. Organised Labour planned on embarking on a strike action but backed out at the last minute after they claimed that the government had demonstrated willingness to combat galamsey.
On TV3' s The Keypoints on Saturday, October 12, 2024, Andy Appiah Kubi, the NPP MP for Asante Akim North stated that Ghana' s Parliament has failed Ghanaians and that there is the need for a change. While speaking on the galamsey menace, he stated that parliament was not diligent when the legislative instrument on mining came before the house for consideration. According to him, Ghana' s parliament is in such a way that the executive organ, which is the president controls everything that happens in the house.
Andy Appiah Kubi explained that because the government appoint leaders in parliament those appointed make sure that the orders of the president are carried out and this means that all parliamentarians have to be whipped in line to ensure that they vote for a legislation even if they do not agree to it. While speaking, the MP who is noted for his strong stand against certain policies of the president noted that he knows his comments will bring trouble but he doesn' t care and will stand and speak the truth.
He called on a new constitution that will limit the power of the president as well as give MPs the free will to decide on matters that affect the country. Appiah Kubi is best remembered for leading the fight of NPP MPs who called on President Akufo- Addo to sack Ken Ofori Atta as finance minister.
