Ronaldo Shines as Portugal Extends Perfect Nations League Run with Win Over Poland
Portugal continued their perfect start in the UEFA Nations League with a commanding 3-1 victory over Poland on Saturday. The Group A1 leaders, led by Cristiano Ronaldo and Bernardo Silva, secured their third consecutive win, solidifying their place at the top of the table with nine points.
Bernardo Silva opened the scoring in the 26th minute, taking advantage of a clever header from Bruno Fernandes to slot the ball into the back of the net. Portugal’s dominance quickly became evident as they dictated the tempo of the game, keeping Polish defenders on their toes. Ronaldo, ever the talisman for his national team, doubled Portugal's lead in the 37th minute. After Rafael Leao struck the post, the rebound fell kindly to the 39-year-old forward, who calmly scored his 133rd international goal with a first-time strike.
Poland, however, fought back in the second half. Piotr Zielinski gave the home side a glimmer of hope with a powerful shot into the roof of the net in the 78th minute. Despite the goal, Poland struggled to create any further clear-cut chances, with Robert Lewandowski kept largely in check by Portugal’s defense.
As Poland pushed for an equalizer, their hopes were dashed when defender Jan Bednarek turned the ball into his own net in the dying minutes, sealing a 3-1 win for the visitors and ending Poland’s two-year unbeaten run at home.
The result leaves Portugal in a commanding position in League A Group One, three points clear of second-placed Croatia, who earlier secured a 2-1 victory over Scotland. Poland, with three points from three games, now find themselves third in the group, while Scotland sits at the bottom with no points.
Portugal’s victory was a continuation of their strong form under coach Roberto Martinez, with Ronaldo proving once again why he remains a key player for both club and country. The Al-Nassr striker’s goal marked his 11th of the season across all competitions. Despite managing his playing time, Martinez continues to rely on Ronaldo's experience and finishing ability. With Ronaldo in top form and the team clicking well, Portugal looks set to continue their impressive Nations League campaign as they edge closer to the knockout stages.
