When Snoop Dogg first met his future wife, Shante Broadus, as a teenager at Long Beach's Polytechnic High School in the 1980s, neither could have imagined the lifelong partnership that would follow. More than 27 years later, the iconic rapper and his wife have built a strong foundation together, navigating the highs and lows of both fame and family life.
Reflecting on his journey with Shante, Snoop Dogg, now 52, speaks of their deep connection with admiration and affection. “She understands me,” Snoop said in an interview with PEOPLE. “She’s a great mother, a tremendous grandmother, an excellent wife, and a great friend.” He credits her with knowing how to push his buttons, whether to bring out his playful side or keep him grounded, saying, "I love it."
Their relationship hasn’t always been smooth sailing. After getting married in 1997, the couple experienced a temporary split in 2004 before reconciling and renewing their vows in 2008. The couple has three children and multiple grandchildren, and over the years, they’ve grown together as they’ve faced the challenges of Snoop’s career and personal life.
“In relationships like this, it’s a rocky road in the beginning because success is new to both,” Snoop admits. As his fame skyrocketed, he struggled with keeping Shante involved in all aspects of his life. “Some things I want you to be a part of, some things I don’t want you to be a part of to protect you,” he recalled thinking early in their marriage. “But not knowing that she should have been there the whole way to protect [me].” Over time, he realized that Shante’s presence was crucial, recognizing that she balanced his bad decisions with her good instincts.
Snoop proudly acknowledges Shante's role as the backbone of their family. "I’m a loving, caring, providing husband. My wife ain’t never worked a day in her life, and that’s what I love,” he says. “I am the work, and you are my backbone.” He credits Shante with teaching him patience, the importance of family, and making time for their loved ones, lessons that have helped shape his life and career.
The couple’s enduring bond, rooted in trust and resilience, is something Snoop takes pride in. "When we said we'd marry, we married 'til death do us part," Snoop reflects.
