Mahama Strategically Influenced NPP’s Decision to Choose Bawumia Over Alan and Ken Agyapong – Amaliba Claims

In a political twist that has sparked heated discussions, NDC stalwart Abraham Amaliba has alleged that former President John Dramani Mahama played a strategic role in shaping the ruling New Patriotic Party's (NPP) decision to select Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its presidential candidate over prominent figures like Alan Kyerematen and Kennedy Agyapong. According to Amaliba, Mahama’s strategy was designed to subtly steer the NPP’s choice in a way that would benefit the opposition NDC in the upcoming general elections.

Amaliba suggests that Mahama’s behind-the-scenes maneuvering pushed the NPP into a difficult position where they felt compelled to choose Bawumia, a decision that he claims was not necessarily the most popular or beneficial for the ruling party. The NPP, known for its strong internal democracy, had other notable candidates such as former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen and the outspoken businessman Kennedy Agyapong. However, Bawumia, the current Vice President, emerged as the NPP’s flagbearer, a move that some have criticized, believing it may weaken the party’s chances in 2024.

Amaliba’s argument is based on the premise that Mahama recognized the growing popularity of Bawumia within the NPP and among certain segments of the electorate, particularly in Northern Ghana. By amplifying Bawumia’s strengths in public discourse, Amaliba believes that Mahama pushed the NPP towards choosing a candidate whose weaknesses may become more apparent during a national campaign. He contends that Bawumia’s association with the current economic challenges and his close ties to the embattled Akufo-Addo administration make him a less formidable opponent compared to Alan or Agyapong.

The assertion that Mahama could have strategically manipulated the NPP’s internal politics has been met with skepticism from some quarters, especially from NPP loyalists. They argue that Bawumia’s selection was purely based on merit and his strong record as Vice President. Yet, others within the political sphere acknowledge the potential of Amaliba’s claim, noting that Mahama’s vast experience in national politics could allow him to employ such tactics to gain an advantage.

Whether or not Mahama’s alleged strategy will work in the NDC’s favor remains to be seen, but Amaliba’s claims have certainly added an intriguing layer to Ghana’s political landscape ahead of the 2024 elections.
