Former President John Dramani Mahama asked electorates to distinguish politicians from their various ways of governance. This he said at a rally in Accra on Monday in anticipation of the elections in Ghana in which he leads his party, NDC.

He, the former President who reigned from 2012 to 2017, called on citizens to give critical attention to the record of all political candidates, since not all politicians have been or are cut from the same cloth. "It is important that Ghanaians understand the distinction amongst us. Some politicians' work is for the people, whereas other politicians go in for themselves and so on, out of self-interest," he explained.

Making the remarks, Mahama indicated that the NDC was committed to ensuring that ordinary Ghanaians enjoyed an improved quality of life through effective policies and transparency in government. He described his administration's achievements, such as investments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, as setting a benchmark for responsibility in leadership. "Our policies were aimed at uplifting the masses and ensuring even development. Let us not lose these qualities as we go into the elections," he added.

Mahama also spoke to the current administration's struggles, notably of the growing economic hardships and hike in the cost of living. He called on the voters to remember a time when there was economic stability under his administration and consider what that means for Ghana's future.

He further exhorted the youth to actively participate in the electoral process and keep the politicians accountable. "You are the future leaders of this nation. It is your responsibility to ask for transparency and good governance from those who seek your vote," he said.

As the NDC revs up for elections, many Ghanaians want a message on Mahama's preparedness for genuine leadership to listen to the needs of the people. The moment when former President Mahama makes a call to differentiate among political candidates is the defining moment in the democratic journey of Ghana, a moment when voters will make decisions that would determine the course of this nation for many years in the future.
